New flatmate

oday I went to the local Animal Welfare League. It's been 3 months since Kali passed away and while I still miss her terribly I felt it was time for a new cat. Well I looked at all the cats and kittens and there were some nice ones, but I wasn't sure. But then I found out that there were more available in a second row behind, so I went there to have a look. In one of the enclosures was a little 19 week old black and white male, who was very friendly, right up at the wire and wanting a pat. So I thought 'he's cute' and went in there to visit. I picked him up to see how he'd react, and he cuddled into my arms and started to purr.

This is exactly what Kali did 19 years ago. I couldn't help it, I just burst into tears. My sister was with me, and didn't understand why I was crying, but when I explained it she understood immediately.

To cut a long story short that little fellow has come home with me. He has been my flatmate for 6 hours, and so far I have discovered he is a chair thief and a bed hog, and the most sooky, purry, adorable little guy ever! He hasn't eaten or drunk yet, or used the litter tray, so I'm hoping he'll do that soon, but he's certainly relaxed enough to do a lot of snoozing, and was quite calm and relaxed from the moment he arrived (though he wasn't too keen on the car ride) so I'm really happy at the moment. As soon as I can get some decent photos I'll post them.

He's yet to be named - this may take me some time. I think Kali was 'kitty' for about a month before I named her!

One star was suspiciously absent from the MTV EMAs in Berlin last night - just where was five-times nominated Lady Gaga? We couldn’t help but notice a bitter twist in host Katy Perry’s – how shall we put this delicately? – below the belt digs at the absentee. Climbing into a giant stiletto, Katy quipped: "They say if men have big shoes they have big... The confusing thing is I borrowed this from Lady Gaga!" Ouch. But we know the Lady is never one to miss a flesh-flashing op, so we were willing to accept the platinum popstar’s excuse that she was in New York promoting the Mac Aids fund – as she explained in her pre-recorded acceptance speech for the (only - eek!) gong she won. Fair enough, we thought.

Except we spotted the ever-so-recognisable star sneaking about in London - and she even tweeted about her visit to make sure we knew she was there. )

An Illinois prisoner claims his swimmers are responsible for Kate Gosselin's eight AND Octomom Nadya Suleman's latest litter ... and now he wants his supposed spawn to come live with him in lockdown.

In the most entertaining handwritten court papers you'll ever read, Jonathan Lee Riches -- who has filed many lawsuits against celebs in the past -- wants custody of the Gosselin kids, the Suleman kids, John Edwards' love child, all the kids on "ABC's 'All My Children'" and Bristol Palin's child "which Bristol kidnapped from Linda Tripp."

In the awesome papers, filed in Illinois, Riches claims he met Kate "at a Harrisburg Long John Silvers over octopuss" -- and when Kate went to a fertility clinic in 2002, his "sperm was added to the mix."

More awesome lines included in the papers:

Taking her turn at mixing up her very own signature tasty treat, Adrienne Bailon visited Millions of Milkshakes in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon (November 6). The Disney cutie was in quite the jovial mood, busting out in laughter as she did her best to mix up the milkshake of her dreams at the celebrity-popular ice cream shop.

Prior to her Millions of Milkshakes outing, Miss Bailon was busy tweeting about her day’s doings, writing, “Eating the most amazing cheese and fruit plate everrrr! Either its the best or I’m starving! Tom Tancredo Walks Off MSNBC Set Because Of Markos Moulitas (VIDEO)

On MSNBC Friday night, David Shuster (filling in for Ed Shultz) addressed hateful signs at Thursday's Capitol Hill "House call" against health care reform. But the discussion escalated into a fight that led a Republican guest to walk off the set.

Former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo refused to criticize Republican leaders for participating in the event, saying there were equally offensive signs at anti-Bush rallies in the past. He said they should talk about the policy, not the signs.

Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitas defended health care reform, pointing out that the military uses government-run health care. Tancredo said veterans complained about their health care and would much rather have a private choice.

"Tom, I'm a veteran. Okay?" Moulitas responded. "I did not get a deferment because I was too depressed to fight a war I supported in Vietnam. I'm a veteran. They want a more effective V.A. ..."


"You're not going to do that. You're not going to try to insult me that way and then pretend like we're just going on and talk about that. You either apologize ..." When Moulitas did not apologize, Tancredo simply took out his earpiece and walked away.

As a Republican student activist, Tancredo spoke out in favor of the Vietnam War but did not serve.

After graduating from college in June 1969,
he became eligible to serve in Vietnam. Tancredo said he went for his physical, telling doctors he'd been treated for depression, and eventually got a deferment.

"I think he left a little early," Shuster joked. "The congressman is always welcome on this show. We always appreciate hearing his point of view. It's a feisty one. That's what we like around here."

One of the next great conservative hopes seems likely to be a California Republican who has already taken on Senate Republicans, has ties to birthers and tea-partiers and is virtually unknown by the mainstream media establishment.

Chuck DeVore, a Republican member of the California State Assembly, is positioning himself as the ideologically pure alternative to Republican Carly Fiorina in the party's effort to take Sen. Barbara Boxer's Senate seat in 2010. This past week, he got the seal of approval from the party base: an endorsement by the Senate Conservative Fund and the explicit backing of conservative darling Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.). Among the right-wing netroots, his race against Fiorina has been elevated to top-tier importance: alongside Marco Rubio's primary bid against Florida Governor Charlie Crist.

But who, exactly, is he? Not many people beyond Republican devotees and California political watchers know the guy. The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza -- who is more plugged into local politics than most D.C.-based reporters -- copped to not really having a clue about DeVore just last week.

Amid the ongoing financial regulation overhaul, the banking industry is hoping to pull off a quiet power grab that has eluded its grasp since the Great Depression, by stripping the independence of the board that sets financial accounting standards.

The move could effectively let banks set their own accounting standards in rough economic times.


Astonishingly, at a time when the public is crying out for greater regulation to limit excessive risk-taking by financial institutions, the banks are trying to get Congress to agree that the next time there's a big downturn, they should have the ability to alter their accounting standards -- essentially, fudge the numbers -- so that the public and investors won't be able to tell how insolvent they really are. By ignoring their declining asset values, they can avoid the standard requirement of raising more capital.

The mechanism is contained in an amendment set to be introduced in mid-November by Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.) that would move final authority over the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) from the Securities and Exchange Commission to a new body, a so-called "oversight" board, that would include the officials charged with managing systemic risks to the financial markets.

Cantor Pushes Back Against Limbaugh, Hitler-Obama Analogies

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) criticized conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh, on Friday, for drawing comparisons between President Obama and Adolph Hitler. And, in a sequence that seems rare in modern Republican politics, the Virginia Republican seems eager to publicize his rebuke.

Cantor's office sent over a write-up of the congressman's interview with Bloomberg News, in which he praised Limbaugh as a voice of the conservative movement but condemned his use of Nazi imagery and analogies to chastise the president.

"Do I condone the mention of Hitler in any discussion about politics?" Cantor said. "No, I don't, because obviously that is something that conjures up images that frankly are not, I think, very helpful."

On this morning's Fox And Friends, hosts Brian Kilmeade and Gretchen Carlson were all a-whip with Salem Witch Trial panic over the thought that Nidal Hasan represented some sort of vanguard of deadly Islamist shootings to come.

Kilmeade began the nonsense thusly:

KILMEADE: Do you think it's time for the military to have special debriefings of Muslim Army officers -- anybody enlisted?...Because if I'm going to be deployed in a foxhole, if I'm going to be sticking in an outpost, I got to know the guy next to me is not going to want to kill me.

First of all, as someone who's been unfortunate enough to catch Brian "The Brown Haired One" Kilmeade revealing his personality on the air, my judgment on the matter is that the only foxhole in which Kilmeade is not likely to encounter someone who harbors the desire to do him harm is one in which he is the sole occupant. And even then, who knows? I give even odds!

Paltrow Joins Kidman in 'The Danish Girl'

Based on David Ebershoff's novel, The Danish Girl is the story of the world's first post-operative transsexual, Einar Wegener, and his wife, Greta. Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) is set to direct, Nicole Kidman has long been attached to play Einar, and Variety reports that Gwyneth Paltrow has stepped in to play Greta. She's stepping in for Charlize Theron, who originally held the role, but has dropped out for unspecified reasons.

The story takes place in 1920s Denmark. Greta was a portrait painter, and needed a model. She asked Einar to step into a dress, stockings, and heels, and created some kind of awakening in Einar. In women's clothes, her husband became an outrageous character named Lili. The paintings of Lili became extremely popular, few realizing a man had stood in for them. Lili than took on a public life of her own, and Greta often introduced Lili as her sister. Eventually, Einar / Lili decided to commit to gender reassignment surgery, a dangerous and experimental procedure at the time. Greta stood beside her husband until his transformation was complete, and then their marriage was declared null and void by the King of Denmark.
